I’ll pass on those .co auctions… KTHX

Over the weekend auction notices came pouring in but after some 10 – 11 days to test out a few hundred hopeful high trafficked hand reg’s I was able to get for $25 a pop on July the 20th… I am officially declaring that I am going to have to pass on all the landrush and so called premium’s. They are all yours… Best of luck :D

Not worth spending hundreds for these to me personally, because really, they are not getting the type of traffic I was gauging and expecting or anything remotely close to justify paying few hundred bucks or even $25 – $30 which is what the current cost is on these at wholesale.

Maybe if these were at the $10 range I would of crossed my fingers and continued to gamble here and there on some names… But nah, something’s telling me to call it quits now before it’s too late. The results have been very disappointing thus far. Gotta cut the loses, and move on, the next opportunity awaits…. Yes it does.

I was one of the hopefuls that .co names would generate some decent traffic on popular typos, but the traffic is very very low and doesn’t justify paying too much money on these long-shots. The money I already spent, it’ll be written off as just an experiment, which is no biggie. You win some, you lose some. That is part of the game.

I remember back in late 2005 or was it 2006… The Belgian (.be) registry ran a promotion to get their ccTLD some exposure where you can get free .BE domains… There was a limit, something like 10 or 100 per person, but of course there was simple ways around it, such as registering at various participating .BE registrars and submitting orders and there really was no shortage of them… Dozens at least as far as I can remember. The registrars were happy to get new customers, even if it was “non-paying” freeloaders. It’s better than nothing.

Once the promo kicked in, I was able to secure many popular .BE domain typo domains… The confirmation letters came by the dozens from all the domain registrars, I was very happy and excited as you can imagine and I was busy the next day or two setting all these 1000s of domains up in my parking accounts.

After about a month or two of monetizing them, I was able to cash out for a lot of money… Buyers for these domains which were producing very targeted and valuable EURO traffic were up my ass. I wish I had ordered not 1000s but 10,000s… Ahh ;)

So, anyways… Whole point I am trying to make is, you are sometimes in the right place, at the right time, presented with some interesting opportunities… So definitely you should gamble, just like I did with the .BE domains years ago. It cost me literally nothing to participate, because the registrations were given away for free. I just gamed the system a bit by bending the rules, because rules are meant to be broken… Don’t you think?

In the .CO case, the standard registration fee is $25 – $30…. I gambled a bit x100s, and now calling it quits. There isn’t really any decent money to be made with these because I am not going to register 1000s of them and hope and pray that they get spikes in traffic or whatever to at least cover the reg costs. I know that many people did, and many will continue to go crazy with speculation as well… But to each his own.

Gambling and speculation is damn addictive, but in order not to go broke.. You gotta keep it real and go by the numbers. Those don’t lie. Here is my advice: It’s highly unlikely to strike it rich with this crazy extension… A few of us thought we could, but I guess we were wrong. Avoid all the hype… Just move on!

  • I guess it depends on “why” a person bought the .co. It was never marketed as a “typo” domain where the money was to be made from “typo” traffic. “co” is the abbreviation for company, like it or not, and .co will represent this dictionary-defined abbreviation for years to come.

If this is why you bought your “.co’s”, for a quick typo buck, than yeah, I would cut your losses. It’s only been out for 13 days…did you expect to rake in riches just on typo traffic in the first 2 weeks?? These domains are meant to be developed and will have their place in the search engines. If you want to see what I think should be done with a .co, check out jco.co. A real shindiggy site that suits the .co extension perfectly. Real chic design and the more of these that get built, the better.

As a matter of fact, .cointernet.co and neustar wanted to specifically discourage anyone buying “.co” for typo traffic. So in a way, if you bought it for that purpose alone, you will be disappointed in any case. .co has its own “individual” future because its a business, a company. And what company would want their success to come from “.com minus the m” notoriety? So they have stayed away from that, and I don’t blame them. Essentially, .co is a brand of its own.
